Our services include regular check-ups, access to diagnostic tools, and proactive emergency planning. Should complications arise, we work closely with obstetricians while continuing to provide essential midwifery support. With expertise in natural childbirth, we monitor for early signs of any concerns and ensure seamless referrals to postnatal care providers, such as Plunket nurses, general practitioners, or iwi providers, to support your baby’s ongoing health and development.

Nestled in the heart of the Waikato region, Pohlen Maternity offers a peaceful, family-friendly, culturally diverse environment for your childbirth journey. Adjacent to Pohlen Hospital, the birthing centre opened in December 1990 and since provided thousands of local families with outstanding maternity care.
Our centre provides a warm, supportive, and personalised birthing experience for you and your family. As every birthing journey is unique, we are committed to ensuring your individual needs are met, you feel safe, comfortable, and cared for every step of the way.

OUR TEAM
You might have just found out you are pregnant? You are not sure what to do next? Most women choose an independent midwife as their Lead Maternity Carer who work in partnership with women. Maternity care to all eligible women in New Zealand is free.
Pohlen Maternity has around 25 midwives who have access to us. We have a number of midwives who have their clinics at Pohlen Maternity and are on site most of the time. You can choose your own midwife.

COPING WITH THE PAIN OF LABOUROur midwives understand that pain is a natural part of labour, signalling that it is progressing as expected. They support you throughout this process, offering pain management techniques such as massage, changing positions, and labouring in water. If pain indicates potential complications, such as the baby being in an unusual position, our midwives can recognise this and provide access to pain relief and additional care. Their priority is to help you avoid unnecessary interventions, ensuring a safe and natural labour experience for both you and your baby.
CONTINUITY OF CAREMidwives provide comprehensive care from your initial pregnancy test through to six weeks postpartum. During early labour, midwives typically come to your home, and as labour progresses, you can choose to stay home or go to Pohlen Birthing Centre or a hospital if needed. After birth, you are welcome to stay in one of our postnatal rooms and receive round the clock care from our maternity aides and midwives. Upon leaving our facility, midwives continue to support you at home, assisting with the transition to motherhood, baby care, and breastfeeding. They prioritise your family's needs and ensure you have ample time to ask questions throughout the process.
